Collision

Our task was to produce our own re-enactment of the “Kuleshov effect”.
1.      We had to plan and storyboard 6 carefully composed and framed shots. Three of which needed be separate individual elements. The other three shots had to be the same and somehow link all of the shots together.
·         We came up with the idea of using a scenic shots for two of the three and then an manufactured object for the third.
·         We wanted to use this type of contents for a contrast between the natural places and the man made objects that are contributing to the downfall of nature. .
2.      We recorded our material using one 3 Chip DV camera.
·         The only place in Plymouth where an 'natural environment' could be found was in the park, a little distance behind the college, so we filmed the two natural shots there...
·         and then filmed the last shot of a random car parked in the Pca car park.
3.      We then edited our work together using Adobe Premiere Pro.
4.      And then finally exported our work as an AVI file and handed in to Tim

The Kuleshov effect is an example of montage editing. Montage editing is when you use 4 or less individually ineffective shots that when edited together in a certain order suggest information and emotions that aren't really being shown. The most obvious example of montage editing is this film of the Kuleshov effect experiment:
Here are some other examples of experiments of the Kuleshov effect:

Audience Feedback:
When we screened our montage edited film, we recorded the feedback from the audience:
·         The audience saw a very subtle change in the emotions shown on Michelle's face between clips.
·         They thought that Michelle's face following the clip of the squirrel showed an emotion of amusement.
·         After the film of the Mother and her son, the audience thought they saw an emotion of kindness yet annoyance.
·         After the last shot of the car, Michelle's face was told to have been shown in a state of shock almost. She appeared to be frightened and upset.
·         Because of the silent soundtrack, the audience said they felt uncomfortable watching the film, and that they also lost track of the length of the film, thinking that it was longer than it actually was.
Treatment
[We open on an establishing shot of a grassy park covered in fallen brown leaves. We see a grey squirrel foraging through these leaves; we follow him with a tracking shot as he bounds away to the left hand side.
The next shot is a medium close of a young girl with long, brown wispy hair. She is leaning against an old large oak tree and is facing away into the distance so that we her faces profile. Her face is tarnished with a blank expression, which changes in front of our eyes into an expression of amusement and contentment, presumably formed because of the squirrels actions.
The next image that comes into frame is one of a mother and her young baby boy throwing pieces of bread around them in order to feed the pigeons approaching. We watch as the boy dropped the handful of bread he was holding, on the floor and then struggles to pick it up.
We cut back to the image of the girl, this time her expression has changed so that she looks with compassion towards the boy.
The third cutaway image is one of a slow in zoom toward a car. The camera is positioned on the floor angled up toward the car so that it gives an ominous feel of intimidation and power.
When we cut back to the final scene of the girl, she has a sad look in her eye, it may not be clear to all the audience but she is sad because of the that the car, a symbol of man made objects has destroyed the warmth and compassion of all of the previous clips of nature.]
[The entire film is completely silent]
